What Building a Microalgae Farm in Tamil Nadu Taught Us About Reliable Supply

Published 2024-06-03 · Nutrialgo

This article replaces an earlier piece about communities embracing spirulina as a superfood. The sentiment of that story still stands, but our readers today are procurement teams, formulators, and QA managers, so here is the version that matters to you: what our origin in Sivaganga District, Tamil Nadu, means for the reliability of your supply.

Why we built everything in one place

Nutrialgo has operated since 2020 from a single facility in Sivaganga District. The ponds, the harvest equipment, the drying and milling line, the packing operation, and the laboratory all sit on the same site. That was a deliberate choice, not an accident of early-stage budgeting.

Every time an ingredient changes hands - farm to processor, processor to trader, trader to packer - documentation degrades. Batch identity blurs, test results get copied rather than generated, and by the time a COA reaches your desk it describes an average of material you did not actually receive. A single-facility model removes those handoffs. The batch we test is the batch we pack is the batch you receive.

What the region contributes

Spirulina cultivation rewards consistent sunlight, warm temperatures, and access to skilled agricultural labor. Tamil Nadu offers all three, and it has given us something equally valuable: a team that has now run multiple years of production cycles together. Cultivation is a craft as much as a science; pond behavior teaches lessons that no manual captures, and those lessons stay with the people who learned them.

Growing without breaking the model

We produce 30 MT per year across 3 acres today. Two more acres are being added now, and the roadmap takes the site to 18 acres. The important detail is what does not change as we scale: the single-facility principle. New ponds join the same site, feed the same line, and answer to the same laboratory. Capacity grows; the chain of custody does not stretch.

For buyers planning annual contracts, this matters more than headline capacity. A supplier who triples output by adding anonymous third-party farms has not really tripled anything you can audit.

What this means for your supplier file

  • One address on every document: cultivation, processing, testing, and dispatch.
  • Batch traceability from pond to pack without third-party gaps.
  • An audit path that visits one site instead of a network of subcontractors.
  • Export documentation already running to Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Azerbaijan.

The community story from our early days has not ended - it has become a supply-chain discipline. If you would like to see what single-origin documentation looks like in practice, request a sample. It arrives with the same paperwork a full shipment would carry, dispatched within one week.

Evaluating a spirulina supplier?

Start with the paperwork. Request a documented sample and judge us on the COA that arrives with it.
